5 Insights before visiting Panama
I’m here to share crucial information you need before embarking on your Panama adventure. My month-long experience in Panama was absolutely incredible! Here are key things you should know:
Panama Accepts the US Dollar
No need for currency exchange as the US dollar is widely accepted and equivalent to the Panamanian Balboa (PAB). You’ll often receive change in PAB. Keep in mind that due to the currency similarity, Panama tends to be one of the more expensive countries in Central America, similar to Costa Rica.
Public Transportation
While urban areas like Panama City have Uber services, they become less available as you venture into smaller towns. The public bus system is an effective mode of transportation, although daytime rides can be lengthy due to frequent stops. I opted for night buses to sleep through the ride. However, the daytime trips offer breathtaking views of the lush, vibrant green landscapes. An 11-hour bus ride from Panama City to Bocas Del Toro cost me $27 USD, but it was definitely worth it, especially if you plan to explore the stunning nearby islands. I stayed on Isla Solarte, and it was a dream!
Panama Canal
The history of the Panama Canal is incredibly intriguing, but exercise discretion when discussing it with locals. Due to US involvement in its construction, it can be a controversial topic. I recommend familiarizing yourself with the historical significance before visiting. Additionally, there are informative canal tours available that delve into its historical context.
Filthy Friday
If you find yourself in Bocas Del Toro and enjoy a lively atmosphere, you must experience Filthy Friday. Almost every Friday, a massive party kicks off around 11 AM, usually starting at Selina’s hostel and lasting until sunrise. You’ll hop from bar to bar via boat, mingling with tourists from all over the world. While this is undoubtedly a tourist attraction, it guarantees a fantastic time. Remember to stay hydrated with liquid IV and prioritize your safety!
San Blas Islands
If you have the opportunity, don’t miss the chance to sail from Bocas Del Toro to the San Blas Islands; I regret not visiting this breathtaking location myself. Comprising 49 uninhabited cayes with crystal-clear waters, these islands boast tiny islets adorned with solitary palm trees. It’s like a picturesque lock screen or a scene out of Spongebob — you get to choose the image that resonates with you.
I hope these insights prove helpful, and I encourage you to explore Panama — it truly is an exceptional destination!
